5 ways to Save Money on School Clothes

Friday, September 9, 2016

I realize in most areas kids are already back in school. Summer is hanging on by a thread and so are most parents wallets with all the money they spent to buy new clothes. Well guess what.... This year we spent a total of $10 on back to school clothes. My wallet is not suffering and my kid looks pretty awesome most days ( I say most because some days he dresses himself.) So to find out my secret just keep reading.

When there was 2 steady incomes in the household I used to go shopping for Abram every few paychecks. Something about buying my kid the latest and greatest made me so happy. Then Eli came and I decided to stay home and save money on childcare. Which also meant save money on shopping. By the time Josiah came I got a pretty good system figured out on ways to save money on clothes and how to have enough of it for years to come.

1. Buy Off Season- I buy sweats for the kids in the summer and I buy shorts in the winter. Nobody seems to want it off season so I stock up because the stores put it on sale or clearance.

2. Size Up- If that off season clothes is at a real good price I buy a few sizes up. The boys will eventually fit into it.

3. Keep the Gifts- I can't tell you how many times the kids have gotten clothes that was the wrong size. When it was just Abram I would return it and get the correct size. Now I keep it because it's bound to fit one of them eventually. Even if it's a size Abram won't wear for a year or 2, I still keep it because that's exactly the reason I wont have to buy him new clothes for school.

4. Sale and Clearance- When we do have some extra money to go shopping, I look through the clearance clothes. The real treat is going shopping once the back to school clothes all goes on sale. I got this $15 shirt for only $4! Yup, that's smart shopping people.

5. Second Hand Stores- Now I know some people may cringe at the thought of second hand stores, but let me let you in on a little secret. Big brand named stores like Target, Old Navy, Forever 21 and H&M all donate clothes to second hand stores like Goodwill. No joke I have bought my boys H&M shirts still with tags on them from Goodwill. Honestly you have to check them out!

Remember kids outgrow clothes so fast that you don't want to spend major bucks on clothes. Save it for them in a bank account instead or take them on a nice trip somewhere. Hope these tips help you shop smarter not harder!

  2. Yes! Such great tips! I try to buy as much off season as I can. The only thing I have a problem doing that with is shoes because I never know how fast their feet will grow and might skip a size or two. I never pay full price. I didn't know that Goodwill got clothes from all those stores! I'll have to check them out!

  3. I do the same thing and buy my kids their clothes for the next season when they are clearancing them out. I've gotten some amazing deals by doing this and it really saves me the hassle of going out right before the new school year or season because I already have stuff at home purchased for way less.

  6. So smart to keep gifts that didn't quite fit...I wouldn't think to do that! I'd return just like you but you're so right - they'll fit one of 'em eventually!
