How I Preschool My Kids

I apologize in advance for my horrible pictures, but I used my phone not my regular camera this day.

Eli just turned 3 in November, but he has always wanted to do everything that Abram does. If it was up to him, he'd be in school already! I knew early on that I would have to teach him myself at home and call it "Mommy's School!"
Eli loves it and looks forward to it, but I have to try to make learning fun for him or he loses interest quickly. We do flash cards and he actually likes those, but I try to do stuff that is less robotic as well.

Learning Game #1 is what I call the "Lids" game. Basically I save all these little bottles with lids and wash them out. I line them up and have him match the lids to their corresponding bottoms. It takes him a while, but he figures it out. Rotate new bottles if it gets too easy.

Benefits of this activity: shape recognition, critical thinking, fine motor skills

Learning Game #2 is the Pom Pom Race! I bought a bag of different size pom poms at Staples for like $1, on clearance, I figured I would need them some day. The kids were bored one afternoon, so I looked in my goodie stash and found these. Honestly I came up with this game in 3 minutes and we played for a good 45. They loved it! Just give them a paper plate and some old kitchen spoons and have them race to see who can get the most on the plate by only using the spoons. Eli always cheats towards the end and uses his hands, but they have fun with it.

Benefits of this activity: color recognition, sensory, fine motor skills

Learning Game #3 (not pictured) Bean Soup. Eli loves soup and he asks me to make it a lot! I had some raw beans in the pantry and told him to make me some soup! I got a giant mixing bowl and dumped all the beans from the cupboard into the bowl. I gave him 2 plastic cups and 2 plastic spoons. I shoved his hands in the giant bowl of raw beans and he played for a good hour with those beans. ( I suggest close supervision as kids tend to forget it's pretend and they want to eat them) He transferred the beans from the bowl with his hands, the spoons, the cups and from one cup to another.

Benefits of this activity: sensory, fine motor skills, independence (since he thinks he is the cook)

Hope your kids enjoy these little learning games as much as mine do! Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. These are great ideas. I'm going to share this with my daughter. She's running out of ideas to keep her toddlers entertained and it's never too early to start teaching them basic skills. :)

  7. You are such a smart mom, such cute activities for kids to keep them engaged as will as teach them basic skills at the same time. Can I get in line to play the pom pom race next, pretty please, haha!
