So you're a Clubfoot mom / Eres mama de niño con pie equino varo

Yesterday I had the pleasure of finally meeting a local clubfoot mom! I have to confess the moments leading up to the meeting I felt so nervous. I was finally getting to meet a woman who shared a similar clubfoot journey with her babies. I actually felt like crying the minute I saw her, but I held it together somehow.

The cyber world is truly amazing. Prior to Josiah's birth I had no social media accounts. After getting serious about raising awareness and sharing our journey, I decided to open them all up. In the months following, I found wonderful Facebook groups with mothers who shared similar journeys as ours. Different in so many ways, yet all so supportive of one another. My experience was just beginning while some ladies were at the middle and some at the end of their clubfoot treatment. All were so helpful with any clubfoot questions or worries I had.

Most moms I connected with were clear across the country or even in other continents! Somehow I feel like these mothers have become my family. We follow each other on social media. We root for our children's milestones. We message each other and even have a phone call here and there. There is just a special bond with clubfoot moms. Truly unbreakable.

It finally dawned on me a few months ago to ask if any moms were local. I was so excited to find out there was 2 in my area! Being as life gets in the way, it took us awhile, but we finally had time to get together. I can't tell you enough what a pleasure it was to meet one. She has 2 beautiful babies with clubfoot under the age of 2. Josiah was so happy to meet them. They sat and studied each other for a few minutes before crawling off, but I pray that they become great friends as they grow older.

We sat and spoke for the, nearly 2 hours, we had together. We shared and compared our stories. We went into depth on the feelings we felt when finding out -vs- how optimistic we are now. We looked at the kids' feet. We connected on such a level that I felt like I finally met someone who understood me. She understood my pain, my happiness, my worry, she knew it all. I was happy to know she also shared my beliefs and faith in God. That was icing on the cake. I left the park with a smile on my face. I was so happy to have crossed paths with such a lovely mommy and I honestly can't wait to see her and those cuties again.

Clubfoot moms, please know you are not alone. There is another mother out there who shares your feelings. Who just found out she's having a clubfoot baby too. There is a mother out there right now crying because the casting phase feels so hard. There is a mother out there who hasn't slept because it's their first night of boots and bar. There is a mother who is trying to figure out how to prevent those pesky blisters! And there are those moms who are so happy because their kids are finally done with treatment. We are out there. We are a community ready and willing to share stories and compare feet. Who will give words of encouragement when those days seem so tough. You, momma, are not alone. We can make it through this journey together.

Estoy disponible a ayudar a cualquier hora. Abrazos de parte de esta madre!

  1. Beautifully stated, Dominique! I'm so glad you connected with that mother! You are exactly right - it's common to start the journey feeling so alone and honestly, feeling very alone through some of those first hard transitions but clubfoot moms are a community of support and we can learn so much from each other. xo
